About Friends of the Viking Ship
Friends of the Viking Ship preserves and displays the Viking, a full-size replica of the ancient Gokstad ship built in Norway in 1893. Visitors take docent-led tours that begin every fifteen minutes to explore this historic vessel, which sailed from Norway to Chicago in 1893 and became a major attraction at the World's Columbian Exposition. The ship is approximately 78 feet long and 17 feet wide, clinker-built with planks fastened together using thousands of iron rivets. The Viking later moved to Lincoln Park in Chicago before being relocated to its current home at Good Templar Park in Geneva, Illinois. Tours allow guests to examine the ship's construction and learn about its remarkable transatlantic voyage and its role in American history. The organization continues efforts to preserve artifacts and memorabilia associated with the Viking for its permanent exhibit.
