Elgin History Museum occupies Old Main, a Greek Revival building constructed in 1856 in Elgin, Illinois. Visitors explore two floors of interactive exhibits that chronicle Elgin's heritage since 1835. The permanent collection includes the Elgin National Watch Company exhibit, where visitors can examine the mechanics of watch production, and an Elgin Road Race car visitors can sit in. Other exhibits let children become shopkeepers at Kretchmer's grocery store, fish in a replica Fox River, and sort through immigrant trunks. A scavenger hunt guides younger visitors through artifacts. The museum offers school and scout group programs including the Bluff City Cemetery Tour, Watch Works presentations, and Great Grandma's Kitchen. Adult groups can arrange guided museum tours or presentations from the Speakers Bureau. The building features an elevator serving all three floors and accessibility at the back entrance.
Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00am – 4:00pm
