About Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum
Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum preserves the history of firefighting in Elgin through exhibits housed in a three-story building designated a National Historic Place in 1991. Visitors explore firefighting memorabilia and vintage fire engines, including an 1869 horse-drawn Silsby Steamer, Elgin's first fire engine, and a 1929 American LaFrance Fire Engine. The museum occupies the last remaining fire barn in the city, built in 1903 and saved by dedicated residents who recognized its historical importance. Guided tours last between fifteen and forty-five minutes, with knowledgeable guides leading visitors through artifacts across all three floors. Self-guided options are also available for those who prefer to explore at their own pace. The Fire Fighter's Memorial Plaza outside offers a place for reflection and remembrance. Located in Elgin, Illinois, the museum operates on weekends and welcomes group tours by arrangement.
