About Fabyan Forest Preserve
Fabyan Forest Preserve preserves a historic 300-acre estate on the west bank of the Fox River in Geneva. The centerpiece is the Fabyan Windmill, a 68-foot, five-story structure built by German craftsman Louis Blackhaus between 1850 and 1860. George Fabyan purchased and moved the windmill to his Riverbank estate in 1914. The windmill combines German, Swedish, and Dutch millwright work and operates by natural wind energy, making it one of the few restored windmills in the world with that capability. After extensive restoration involving authentic timber and gear work sourced from the Netherlands, the windmill reopened to the public in 2005. The foundation required 33 workers to mix concrete by hand, measuring 42 inches deep and 26 inches thick. Roman numeral markings carved into original beams remain visible. Tours and seasonal hours are available for visitors exploring this engineering landmark at the preserve.
