About Fairmount Water Works

Fairmount Water Works is an interpretive center where visitors explore Philadelphia's water history through exhibits, tours, and hands-on activities. The Engine House Theater shows films about the city's role in water systems, while the Know Your Watershed exhibit and a restored Jonval Turbine—over nine feet in diameter and installed in 1851—illustrate engineering achievements. A Freshwater Mussel Hatchery operates as a living science laboratory on site. Visitors can participate in guided Landmark Tours exploring water's past and present, Disease and Public Health Tours examining epidemics and treatment, or Said in Stone Tours focusing on architecture and sculpture. Saturday drop-in sessions offer hands-on activities for all ages. The center hosts rotating exhibitions, photography displays, and performances. Tours accommodate groups of ten or more and explore both indoor exhibits and outdoor grounds. General admission is free. The Water Works sits at the lower level of a National Historic Landmark near Philadelphia's Museum of Art.
