About Coryell Museum and Historical Center

Coryell Museum and Historical Center preserves and celebrates the history of Coryell County through fifty exhibits across 24,450 square feet. Visitors explore the Lloyd and Madge Mitchell Spur Collection, the world's largest collection of spurs, featuring pieces worn by Jackie Kennedy and Pancho Villa alongside Western art and historical cowboy relics. The museum displays the Coryell County Log Jail, a rare double-wall structure built in 1855 that once held outlaw Sam Bass. A military exhibit in the Dawson Cooper Exhibit Hall documents local involvement from the Texas Revolution through Operation Iraqi Freedom, including the history of Camp Hood, now Fort Hood. The Back Hall recreates simpler times with a working soda fountain from a local drugstore, a hair salon, apothecary, blacksmith shop, Buckhorn Saloon, and antique Model Ts from 1915 and 1923. Admission is free. The museum is located in Gatesville, Texas, and suits anyone interested in Texas history and frontier heritage.
