About Fort Croghan Museum
Fort Croghan Museum in Burnet preserves a military outpost established in 1849 to protect settlers from the Comanche and Lipan Apache during westward expansion. Visitors walk or drive a paved path through eight historical structures, two original to the fort and six relocated from elsewhere in Burnet County. The 1500 square foot air-conditioned museum displays exhibits covering Fort Croghan, early settlers, ranching, and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The grounds feature outdoor covered areas showcasing historic vehicles and agricultural equipment. Benches and picnic tables throughout allow visitors to rest and enjoy their own food and drinks on the property. General admission is free. The museum operates seasonally, and the grounds host two annual festivals. A research library and archives offer deeper exploration of local history for those interested in genealogy or Burnet County heritage.
