About Bastrop County Historical Society

The Bastrop County Historical Society operates a museum and visitor center dedicated to preserving the history of Bastrop and Bastrop County. Visitors explore permanent and special exhibits through self-guided tours or with a docent. The museum presents the region's history from archeological evidence of human settlement a thousand years ago through the Spanish colonial period and the establishment of Bastrop in 1830. Exhibits cover El Camino Real de los Tejas, the Royal Road connecting Spanish missions and posts across the region, and the Baron de Bastrop's vision for a German settlement. The museum hosts the Soul Circuit exhibition on African American rodeos in Texas, Music in the Museum performances on the porch, and the Historic Fairview Cemetery Tour. Research materials and information about historic communities in the county are available to visitors.
