About Charles F. Hagar Planetarium

The Charles F. Hagar Planetarium, located at San Francisco State University, offers live sky shows in a dome theater equipped with a Spitz projector that displays more than 1300 stars, the Sun, Moon, and planets on the ceiling above. Three rows of circular seating accommodate up to 45 visitors per show. During presentations, the planetarium simulates what the sky appears from any location on Earth at any time, whether day or night, regardless of weather conditions outside. The facility also uses its projection system to move backward and forward through time, helping visitors understand the motions and patterns of celestial bodies. Since opening in 1973, the planetarium has served an estimated 100,000 visitors including students, school children, community groups, and the general public. The planetarium is wheelchair accessible. Public shows take place on Fridays. The facility is housed in Thornton Hall on the campus in San Francisco, California.
