Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site in West Columbia preserves 134 years of Texas history across sugar production, cattle ranching, and oil drilling under the Varners, Pattons, and Hoggs. Visitors tour the main house with its parlor, family room, and kitchen, explore a separate cottage overlooking Varner Creek, and view an oil pump and carriage in the barn. The site offers public tours and special events, including educational programs about cowboy life led by educators from the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd. School programs bring students to learn about the enslaved and free families whose labor built the plantation. A rental cottage with front-porch rocking chairs allows guests to experience the property's tranquil scenery. Admission provides access to both Varner-Hogg and the adjacent Levi Jordan Plantation.
