About Sam Houston Statue

The Sam Houston Statue, known locally as "Big Sam," is a 67-foot monument to General Sam Houston that stands along Interstate 45 in Huntsville. Visitors come to photograph this iconic landmark, which sits atop a 10-foot Texas sunset granite base and is visible for more than six miles from the south. Created by Huntsville-born artist David Adickes, the statue is the tallest figure of an American hero in the world, built from 30 tons of concrete and steel. At the base of the monument, the Sam Houston Statue & Huntsville Visitor Center provides maps and brochures, short videos about local history, and a gift shop stocked with Texas souvenirs and collectibles inspired by Sam Houston's legacy. The center's brick pavers form a walkway where families and groups have commemorated loved ones and contributed to preserving the monument's legacy. The site suits visitors interested in Texas history and iconic roadside landmarks who want to learn about General Houston's significance to the state.
