About Sam Houston Memorial Museum

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville preserves the legacy of General Sam Houston, the only man to serve as governor of two states and president of an independent republic. Visitors explore a fifteen-acre complex on the grounds of Houston's former property, touring the museum building, two historic homes where Sam Houston and his family lived, and other period structures set in a park-like landscape. The museum also houses the Republic of Texas Presidential Library. Self-guided visits allow families to walk the grounds, picnic on the property, and learn about Houston's life as a soldier, statesman, and leader of Texas independence, as well as the history of his wife Margaret Lea Houston and their eight children. The complex includes the Katy and E. Don Walker Education Center for those seeking deeper study of this pivotal era in Texas history.
