The Walker County Historical Commission operates the Gibbs-Powell Home, a Greek Revival house built in 1862 and one of the last remaining nineteenth-century residences in Huntsville. Visitors tour the restored home, which has been preserved as a county museum and archive since 1984. The Commission's work includes research and documentation related to Walker County's rich heritage, including the placement of over 89 historical markers throughout the region. The organization, established in 1963, focuses on discovering and circulating information about the county's historical and prehistoric resources.
