About Sebastopol House Historic Site

Sebastopol House Historic Site preserves a Greek Revival mansion built using limecrete, an innovative construction technique. Visitors tour the home to learn about its unique building method, developed by local chemist John Esten Park as a mixture of gravel and lime. Workers employed slip form casting to pour limecrete continuously into forms that were raised upward as each layer set, creating seamless walls without joints. This approach produced stronger, more durable structures than traditional construction. The house, built in 1856, originally belonged to Col. Joshua Wright Young and later to Seguin Mayor Joseph Zorn. Despite over 150 years of Texas weather and time's effects, the mansion survives as one of few remaining limecrete buildings in Texas. The site suits visitors interested in Civil War-era architecture and construction history who wish to explore hands-on how mid-1800s building techniques functioned. Sebastopol House Historic Site is located in Seguin, Texas.
