About The Sophienburg Museum & Archives

The Sophienburg Museum & Archives preserves the history of German settlers who arrived in Texas during the mid-1800s, guided by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, who named the original fortress Sophienburg in honor of his fiancée, Princess Sophie. Visitors explore immersive exhibits featuring artifacts, photographs, and documents that chronicle daily life and contributions of German immigrants to New Braunfels. The archives house over one million images and records, accessible to researchers and genealogists by appointment. The museum store, Sophie's Shop, offers books on local history, authentic German handcrafted items, and collectibles. Community programs include educational lectures, heritage festivals, yoga classes, and events like Kaffeeklatsch gatherings. The museum occupies the historic site where Prince Carl laid the cornerstone in 1845. Active-duty military personnel, National Guard, Reserve members, and their families receive free admission through the Blue Star Museums program. General admission is charged; prices are published on sophienburg.com.
