About Sherman House Museum

The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio, preserves the birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his brother U.S. Senator John Sherman. Visitors tour rooms restored to reflect life in the original 1811 frame home, including a parlor, dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms. An 1816 addition housed a parlor and study for their father, Judge Charles Sherman. An 1870 brick front contains a Victorian parlor furnished with pieces owned by General and Ellen Sherman, including a parlor set originally belonging to General Ulysses S. and Julia Grant. The second floor features a bedroom with family memorabilia, a recreation of Sherman's Civil War field tent with artifacts and a sound and light presentation, and an exhibit of Civil War artifacts, guns, and GAR memorabilia. Three historically accurate gardens—a kitchen garden, medicinal garden, and Native Plants of Ohio garden—are always accessible. The museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Civil War Preservation Trail, operates as a memorial to the Sherman family.
