About Fairfield County Heritage Association
The Fairfield County Heritage Association connects visitors to the region's history through multiple historic house museums in Lancaster. The Sherman House Museum, a National Historic Landmark on East Main Street, preserves the 1811 frame home where General William Tecumseh Sherman and U.S. Senator John Sherman were born, showing the house as it appeared during the Sherman family's residence with its original 1811 frame structure, 1816 addition, and 1870 Victorian front. The Georgian Museum offers guided tours of thirteen rooms in an 1830s mansion furnished as the Maccracken family knew it, featuring a remarkable three-story cantilevered spiral staircase rising to a glass cupola—one of craftsman Daniel Sifford's finest examples. The association also operates self-guided trails through downtown Lancaster and Elmwood Cemetery where visitors scan QR codes to uncover local history. These attractions suit anyone interested in nineteenth-century architecture, family history, and regional heritage.
