About Museum of Butler TN
The Butler and Watauga Heritage Museum in Butler, Tennessee tells the extraordinary story of Old Butler, the only incorporated town intentionally flooded by the TVA. Visitors walk through exhibits depicting the town's relocation to higher ground to make way for Watauga Lake, which provided flood control and electricity to the region. The museum building itself was modeled after the historic Butler Train Depot. Inside, carefully curated displays bring to life early East Tennessee farming and lumber communities, showing how families adapted when their town was relocated. The museum also features the restored W.S. Stout General Store, originally built in 1930 beside railroad tracks and later moved to higher ground where it operated for decades. An American Veterans Memorial Walk and the America 250 Digital Exhibit complement the historical displays. A gift shop offers local items and supports the nonprofit museum's preservation efforts.
