The Reece Museum in Johnson City preserves and presents the history and culture of Appalachia through exhibitions, collections, and community programs. Visitors explore approximately 22,000 artifacts that document the region's past and contemporary art. The museum maintains current and upcoming exhibitions, including the Tennessee Music Pathways exhibition, alongside an online collections portal for research. Guided tours are available by arrangement. The museum also offers the Recollections Podcast, which draws from its holdings. One of only eighteen accredited museums in Tennessee by the American Alliance of Museums, the Reece operates to the highest standards of excellence. Founded in the late 1920s as a history class project, the museum was formally dedicated in 1965 as the B. Carroll Reece Memorial Museum, named for a First District congressman. The institution serves students and citizens throughout the state and the Appalachian region.
Admission is free. The venue says: “The Reece Museum, a unit of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, is free and open to the public.”
