Friends of Sycamore Shoals Historic Area preserves one of Tennessee's most historically significant sites in Elizabethton. Visitors explore a museum and a replica of Fort Watauga while learning about pivotal moments in American history. The outdoor drama Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals features local performers acting out the late 18th-century events that unfolded here, including the 1772 formation of the Watauga Association, the first majority-rule democratic government in America, and the 1775 Transylvania Purchase, the largest private land deal in American history. The Overmountain Men mustered at this location in 1780 before their march to the Battle of Kings Mountain, a turning point in the American Revolution. The historic area offers walking paths along the Watauga River, seasonal programs including reenactments and demonstrations of colonial life, and educational activities suited to visitors of all ages. The site hosts events throughout spring, summer, and early fall that showcase period crafts and customs.
