About Home Sweet Home Museum

Home Sweet Home Museum is an eighteenth-century salt-box house on East Hampton's village green where visitors tour period rooms filled with antique furnishings, china, and lustreware from the colonial and nineteenth-century eras. The house was furnished as a shrine to John Howard Payne, one of America's first great actors and playwrights, with memorabilia and period revival pieces collected by Gustav Buek and his wife. The museum's grounds feature three distinct gardens reflecting historical American and European garden styles. A parlor window fragrance garden grows plants associated with the period home. An eighteenth-century herb garden and nineteenth-century pleasure garden showcase plant species from medieval times through the nineteenth century. The dining room displays blue transfer ware and willow-pattern china. A visit suits those interested in colonial architecture, historical furnishings, garden history, and theatrical heritage. The experience involves walking through the house and exploring the surrounding gardens in East Hampton, New York.
