About Heritage Farmstead Museum

The Heritage Farmstead Museum is a living history site where visitors explore early 1900s farm life on the original four-acre Blackland Prairie homestead in Plano. The grounds feature fifteen historic buildings, including the 1891 Farrell-Wilson House with its original nine paint colors, wraparound porch, and period interiors. Visitors take self-guided tours of the grounds or opt for guided tours of the main house, which showcase how residents adapted to the region over decades, from adding bathrooms between 1900 and 1905 to installing electricity in the 1920s. The working farm maintains chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep, turkeys, and a Mammoth Jack Donkey named Poncho. The museum's collection contains more than 10,000 objects and archival materials documenting regional agricultural heritage. Wagon rides are available, and visitors can purchase chicken scratch to feed the free-range birds. The grounds feature decomposed granite walkways for accessibility.
