observatory telescope silhouette — photo from the venue's own site
Fremont Peak Observatory Association operates public programs at Fremont Peak State Park near San Juan Bautista, where visitors observe the night sky through telescopes during scheduled evening events. The observatory sits atop Fremont Peak, reached by a short walk up a marked road through the state park. Visitors should arrive before sunset for evening programs and check the weather status before heading up, as conditions at the peak frequently differ from surrounding areas. Groups larger than ten should contact the association in advance so staff can plan accordingly. The observatory is located approximately thirty minutes from San Juan Bautista, accessed by driving eleven winding miles up San Juan Canyon Road. All public programs are free and require no reservations. The state park charges a day-use parking fee per vehicle.
Admission is free. The venue says: “FPOA programs are always free and no reservations are required.”
