About John Steinbeck House
John Steinbeck's birthplace and childhood home is a restored Queen Anne style Victorian located in Salinas, California. Visitors tour all three floors of the house, including John's bedroom and the bed where he was born, guided by docents who share facts about the author's early life. The house features Steinbeck family photographs and memorabilia throughout. A restaurant operates within the Victorian, serving lunch and specializing in fresh, locally sourced cuisine from the Salinas Valley. The Best Cellar gift shop offers unique items including cookbooks featuring the restaurant's recipes, wooden bookmarks with Steinbeck quotes, and other keepsakes. The house, built in 1897 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was restored and opened to the public by The Valley Guild, a group of volunteers dedicated to celebrating Steinbeck's literary legacy and local agricultural heritage.
