The Edith Farnsworth House in Plano is a museum dedicated to the modernist masterpiece designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1945. Visitors tour the main residence, a structure of glass and steel raised on thin white I-beam supports overlooking the Fox River. The house displays Mies-designed furniture and other period pieces, though exhibitions rotate seasonally. The Barnsworth Gallery, a contemporary round barn adjacent to the main house, exhibits rotating displays including ceramics, textiles, and art installations. A gently sloping path encircles the gallery on the way to the house. The property encompasses the surrounding landscape, integral to van der Rohe's aesthetic vision, where the stillness of the architecture contrasts with the natural movements of water, sky, and vegetation. The museum welcomes thousands of international visitors annually and is owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
