Central Coast Zoo, formerly Charles Paddock Zoo, is San Luis Obispo County's only zoo and the only facility in the county accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo houses hundreds of species from around the world within five acres of Atascadero Lake Park. Animals living here participate in globally managed conservation programs designed to preserve species and their wild habitats. Visitors can view burrowing owls, ring-tailed lemurs, red pandas, and meerkats among the diverse animal collection. The zoo sits within a larger park offering playground equipment, walking pathways, a lake with paddleboats, fishing, and picnic areas.
