About Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science Building

Buhl Planetarium and Observatory in Pittsburgh presents space exploration shows in a high-definition, full-dome theater that takes visitors to the Moon, Saturn, distant galaxies, and the farthest reaches of the observable universe without leaving the city. Established in 1939 by The Buhl Foundation to honor Pittsburgh philanthropist Henry Buhl Jr., the planetarium offers multiple programs for visitors of all ages. Shows include Beginner's Guide to the Universe with a live presenter, Expedition: Earth and Expedition: Moon featuring the robot character Quasi, Symphony of the Planets exploring the solar system, Big Astronomy showcasing observatories in Chile, and Blueprints to Blast Off following lunar mission engineering. The facility also presents daily laser shows combining vibrant colors and music, late-night laser events, and SkyWatch astronomy events where visitors work one-on-one with experts. Visitors learn to identify planets and constellations visible from their own backyards. Tickets are sold online through the venue's website.
