About Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is a restored 87,500-square-foot underground water reservoir built in 1926 for Houston's municipal water system. Visitors tour the massive concrete space, which features 221 slender columns rising 25 feet tall and produces a distinctive 17-second echo. The Cistern hosts guided history tours that explain the structure's architecture and its role in the city's early water infrastructure. Art installations and performances transform the cavernous interior into an immersive public venue. A ground-level passageway and ADA-compliant walkway around the perimeter allow easy access throughout the space. Current exhibitions include immersive audiovisual installations featuring light, sound, and interactive elements. The Cistern operates Wednesday through Sunday, with tickets sold online through the venue's website. Reservations are recommended for visits to this unique Houston attraction.
