About Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is a restored 1926 underground water reservoir, now open for tours, performances, and art installations within its 87,500-square-foot space. Visitors walk an ADA-compliant six-foot-wide perimeter path past 221 concrete columns that rise 25 feet through the chamber, experiencing a distinctive 17-second echo. Cistern history tours guide visitors through the structure's architecture and its role in Houston's municipal water system before decommissioning in 2007. The venue currently features Undercurrents, an immersive installation by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer combining voices, light, and audiovisual elements. Located at The Water Works in Houston, the Cistern charges admission with tickets sold online. Military personnel, youth ages 9-17, college students, and seniors 65 and older receive a two-dollar discount upon presenting valid identification, according to buffalobayou.org.
