About Bonita Museum & Cultural Center

The Bonita Museum & Cultural Center preserves the culture, history, arts, and crafts of El Rancho de la Nacion in South San Diego County. Visitors explore a self-guided History Gallery featuring information about Kumeyaay village sites and animals along the Sweetwater River, local urban legends including the Proctor Valley Monster, and regional history spanning Alta California, Spain, and Mexico. Exhibits cover local agriculture, the Bonnie Brae Lemons, the Sweetwater Dam, and architecture throughout the area. The museum displays constantly changing history and art exhibitions, and a sculpture garden showcases works by local artists, with lighting effects visible at sunset. A research archive preserves over two thousand historical objects with an online database in development. The museum hosts school tours, film screenings, lectures, workshops, poetry readings, and musical performances. The facility includes wheelchair-accessible entrances, exhibition spaces, research archives, and restrooms. Service dogs are welcome on non-retractable leashes. The museum is located in Bonita, California, adjacent to the Bonita-Sunnyside Library.
