About William Root House Museum & Garden

William Root House Museum & Garden is the first house museum in the United States to offer a fully self-guided touchscreen tour, located in Marietta, Georgia. Visitors explore a 180-year-old residence through interactive touchscreens, activity books, scavenger hunts, and interactive areas that examine the lives of the Root family and their enslaved house servants. Current exhibits include a Victorian Funeral display featuring 19th-century embalming equipment, mourning jewelry made from human hair, and an authentic 1850s death mask. The grounds feature mid-19th-century gardens planted with vegetables, medicinal and culinary herbs, fruit trees, and decorative flowers researched for historical availability. The museum charges admission with different rates for students, adults, and seniors, and group discounts are available. A refurbished 1830s log cabin serves as the visitor center and gift shop. The experience suits all ages interested in domestic history, urban slavery interpretation, and Victorian-era life.
