About Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History

Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History houses the famous General locomotive at its center in Kennesaw, Georgia. Visitors explore three permanent exhibits: Railroads: Lifelines of the Civil War, Glover Machine Works: Casting a New South, and The Great Locomotive Chase featuring the General. The museum spans nearly 50,000 square feet and includes the Jolley Education Center, an 8,000 square foot facility with classroom space and a dedicated play area for young children. Georgia's Merci Boxcar, a French gift following World War II, is housed here as well. The Railroad Education Center Library & Archives holds an extensive collection of Civil War and railroad documents. Guided tour programs include "A Nation Divided," "Industrialized America," "Museum Explorers," and "Junior Railroaders," accommodating school groups and families. The General Emporium gift shop offers Civil War artifacts, railroad collectibles, model trains, and the museum's signature line of preserves. As a Smithsonian Affiliate, the museum serves visitors of all ages and abilities through educational programming and exhibits.
