About Washington-Wilkes Historical Museum

Washington-Wilkes Historical Museum displays George Washington's gravy boat, Jefferson Davis' field desk, and an Eli Whitney Cotton Gin alongside more than 200 years of local artifacts. Visitors explore rooms furnished with mid-1800s antiques in a restored 1835 saltbox house that was enlarged in 1857 by Samuel Barnett, Georgia's first Railroad Commissioner. Special collection rooms focus on Civil War relics, African American history, Native American materials, and a children's playroom. The museum also features Dave the Slave pottery, a Victorian suit of armor, photographs, documents, and Georgia pottery pieces. Families interested in regional history, Civil War era artifacts, or period furnishings will find detailed displays organized by theme throughout the house. The museum operates Tuesday through Saturday with parking and entrance in back. It is located in historic Washington, Georgia.
