About Guard House Museum

The Guard House Museum welcomes visitors to explore over 200 years of Augusta history on the historic Summerville Campus. Established in 2004, the museum serves as a history headquarters and welcome center for those interested in the city's past. Visitors can examine timeline exhibitions that chronicle the development of Augusta University and its legacy institutions, including the Medical College of Georgia and Academy of Richmond County. The museum also tells the story of the surrounding Sand Hills and Summerville historic districts. The building itself is the United States Army Arsenal Guard House, constructed in 1866 at the corner of Walton Way and Katherine Street, which once stood at the entrance to the U.S. Arsenal that operated for more than 125 years. Guided tours of the historic Summerville Campus are available by appointment. The museum functions as a starting point for visitors wishing to explore the history walk that circles the campus in Augusta, Georgia.
