The Mitford Museum & Discovery Center in Hudson showcases the literary legacy of bestselling author Jan Karon and the small North Carolina town that inspired her beloved Mitford novels. Located in the restored Hudson Arts Center schoolhouse where Karon attended grades one through seven, the museum displays personal artifacts, letters, and memorabilia that shaped her creative journey. Visitors explore exhibits bringing the stories behind the Mitford series to life. The museum operates the Happy Endings Bookstore, selling exclusive Mitford gifts including books, home décor, apparel, and ornaments. Throughout the year, the museum hosts workshops, art exhibitions, readings, and performances celebrating creators of all ages. The Candace Freeland Photography of Merit Award invites youth photographers to compete annually, while GetLit!, the annual literary weekend, features bestselling authors offering readings, workshops, and writing contests.
