Catawba County Museum of History is a free-admission facility in Newton housing thousands of artifacts and an extensive archive documenting the region's heritage. Visitors explore interactive exhibits including a 360-degree view of a rare Revolutionary War British officer's red coat from the American Revolution, examining details like regimental buttons, epaulettes, and gold lace cuffs from every angle. The museum operates as part of the Catawba County Historical Association, which also stewards three additional historic sites: Murray's Mill Historic District in Catawba, featuring a working roller mill with a 28-foot waterwheel; Bunker Hill Covered Bridge in Claremont, one of only two surviving wooden covered bridges in North Carolina; and Harper House, a Queen Anne-style residence in Hickory serving as the Hickory History Center.
