About Fort Defiance
Fort Defiance is a historic house museum in Lenoir dedicated to preserving the home of Major General William Lenoir and the history of the Yadkin Valley. Built between 1788 and 1792, the house originally served as a plantation, U.S. Post Office, and lumber office. Visitors can explore the restored main house and the smokehouse, the only surviving original outbuilding from the period. The museum offers both guided and self-guided tours of the house and grounds, examining life in the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. The restored home has been returned to its 1792 appearance after historians removed later additions and reattached relocated sections. Special events and field trips are available for those interested in deeper engagement with the site. The museum operates seasonally with separate schedules published online. Fort Defiance charges admission with different rates for adults and children.
