About Savannah Ogeechee Canal Museum and Nature Center

The Savannah Ogeechee Canal Museum and Nature Center interprets the history and ecology of a historic barge canal chartered in 1824 and constructed between 1826 and 1830. Visitors explore miles of diverse trails through swamps, rivers, sandhills, and saw palmetto forest, with opportunities for kayaking, hiking, photography, and birdwatching. The main site features a Canal Museum displaying local history and hosts Swamp School educational programs throughout the year. The Half Moon Lake Trailhead offers a separate one-kilometer woodland walk across a wooden bridge over a swampy river where alligators inhabit their natural setting. The 16.5-mile canal traverses from a tidal lock at the Savannah River through four lift locks to the Ogeechee River. The site suits outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, birders, scouts, walkers, and runners seeking natural recreation and education. Located at Fort Argyle Road in Savannah, Georgia, the museum and nature center charges admission, with hours published online.
