About Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park preserves Indigenous archaeological sites in Macon, Georgia. Visitors explore grass-covered earthen mounds and walk paths leading to a reconstructed earth lodge, an ancient ceremonial structure. The park features an observation platform offering views across the landscape. An on-site museum displays artifacts and presents the history of Indigenous peoples who occupied this region for thousands of years. The park was the location of the largest archaeology dig in American history, during which over 800 workers uncovered approximately 3 million artifacts. Educational field trips bring school groups to learn about the site's significance. The park also hosts the Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration, a community event featuring Indigenous dancers and cultural programming. Volunteers assist with park operations and visitor services throughout the year.
