The Cannonball House in Macon is a museum dedicated to Georgia's antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras. Built in 1853 as a townhouse for a local planter, the house gained its name when a Union artillery shell pierced the front wall during the Civil War without exploding. Visitors take 45-minute guided tours of the main house, brick kitchen, and servants' quarters while exploring Civil War exhibits and the Sidney Lanier collection. The house features period furnishings and displays of artifacts from the era, including vintage military uniforms and period clothing on mannequins. The landscaped grounds include a brick garden with a stone fountain and trimmed hedges. The gift shop offers locally made jellies, honey, and preserves. The museum opens Tuesday through Saturday with tours offered every half hour. Education programs serve students from Pre-K through 12th grade with curriculum-based activities. The Cannonball House is located in downtown Macon and charges admission.
