About Lyons Farm

Lyons Farm in Stonecrest, Georgia is a historic homestead that interprets the lives of early white farmers and the enslaved people who later founded the nearby community of Flat Rock. Visitors explore one of DeKalb County's oldest homesteads, continuously inhabited for over 150 years, to understand the agricultural lifestyle that once dominated the rural Piedmont. The property features several preserved structures including the smokehouse, likely the oldest building on site, along with a sorghum mill and a three-seater outhouse. Interpretive signs throughout the farm explain the cultivation of muscadine, sorghum and other crops that sustained the household. The main house is being restored to reflect its appearance during active farming generations. Visitors learn how enslaved people from Lyon Farm went on to establish Flat Rock after the Civil War, one of Georgia's oldest African-American communities, and discover the story of Hill Lyons, born enslaved at the farm, who became a founding father of the Flat Rock Methodist Church.
