About Oak Ridge History Museum
Oak Ridge History Museum presents the experience of living and working in America's Secret City during the Manhattan Project. Located at the Midtown Community Center in Oak Ridge, the museum features artifacts and photographs from this pivotal period in World War II history. Visitors explore exhibits about the four main plants—X-10, Y-12, K-25, and S-50—that were constructed between 1943 and 1945 to produce enriched uranium. A replica dorm room showcases how workers and families lived in the rapidly expanding city, which grew from a planned population of 13,000 to around 75,000 by summer 1945. The museum traces the Manhattan Engineer District's development of housing, commercial, utility, school and medical facilities needed to support the specialized personnel who came to Oak Ridge. Group meetings and special events can be held at the Midtown Community Center venue.
