About James and Barbara Moore Observatory

The James and Barbara Moore Observatory at Florida SouthWestern State College's Charlotte Campus offers public viewing sessions where visitors observe celestial objects through telescopes. The main 16-inch telescope is housed in a dome, with several smaller telescopes positioned outside. Observers can view planets, double stars, galaxies, nebulas, star clusters, and the moon. Sessions begin approximately half an hour after sunset and typically conclude between 10 pm and 11 pm, with no advance reservations required. Throughout the evening, brief astronomy-related topics are presented repeatedly. Visitors arriving before complete darkness can enjoy views of the campus lake from lakeside picnic tables while equipment is being set up and aligned. Public sessions occur on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. The observatory is located on the FSW Charlotte Campus in Punta Gorda.
