About Iroquois Museum

Iroquois Museum is an educational institution in Howes Cave dedicated to fostering understanding of Iroquois culture through Iroquois art and artists. Visitors explore art exhibits in a modern building designed to evoke the Great Iroquois Longhouses, featuring a long gallery beneath a skylight that recalls traditional elm bark longhouses from 400 years ago. The museum's open mezzanine references the upper level of bunks and storage found in historic longhouses. Guided tours led by museum staff last about 45 minutes to an hour and include a brief introduction to the Haudenosaunee, a walk through current art exhibits, and views of pieces in the permanent collection highlighting Haudenosaunee artists. Tours can be personalized to fit visitors' interests, time frame, and physical mobility. An outdoor amphitheater with a special floor constructed for Iroquois social dancing hosts storytelling, talks, and performing arts. The museum serves as a meeting place for all peoples to celebrate Iroquois culture and diversity. School programs and virtual tours are available for students.
