About Alco Historical & Technical Society

Alco Historical & Technical Society preserves and shares the history of the American Locomotive Company, a major builder of steam and diesel locomotives based in Schenectady, New York. Visitors explore museum exhibits housed at the Walter Elwood Museum in Amsterdam, New York, featuring artifacts and historical documents that tell the story of ALCO's locomotive production. The Society also documents the company's significant role during World War II as a manufacturer of tanks and other war materiel, as well as its involvement in the early automobile industry. The organization participates in train shows throughout the region, including the annual "Rails Along the Mohawk" model train show where visitors can browse model trains, train sets, parts, and accessories. Special group tours of the exhibits can be arranged in advance by contacting the Society. Membership is available for those interested in supporting the preservation of ALCO's legacy for future generations.
