About Hugh Torance House and Store

The Hugh Torance House and Store in Huntersville is North Carolina's oldest surviving store, dating to approximately 1779. Visitors tour the remarkably intact federal-style home with its attached mercantile store on guided living history adventures led by docents who share stories of Hugh Torance, a traveling merchant and Revolutionary War soldier, his wife Isabella Kerr Falls, and their son James G. Torrance. The two-story structure retains original floor plans, interior and exterior woodwork, masonry, and hardware from its evolution from a 600-square-foot log cabin. The homesite offers free community programs including guided tours, school field trips with activities, and seasonal special events. Visitors also experience HEARTS Happenings, place-based programs partnering with the adjacent 1831 Greek Revival home Cedar Grove to explore local history, ecology, nature, and the arts. Located two miles west of downtown Huntersville, the site suits families and school groups seeking educational experiences exploring 18th-century life and Mecklenburg County history.
