Historic Ephrata Cloister preserves a monastic settlement established in 1732 near Lancaster, where visitors tour Germanic-style log and stone buildings to learn about the celibate community's distinctive spiritual life. Guided tours at multiple times throughout the week explore the site's history of remarkable Fraktur calligraphy, self-composed a cappella music with over one thousand original compositions, and an ambitious printing operation that produced the 1500-page Martyrs Mirror, the largest book printed in colonial America. The Museum Store stocks hand-turned wooden bowls by Paul Luttrell, ironware by Fred Eberly, redware pottery, embroidered notecards, Fraktur cards, over 200 books on local and colonial history, and natural soaps.
