About Harris Tower Railroad Museum

Harris Tower Railroad Museum is a preserved railroad signal tower where visitors operate a computer simulation connected to the building's original 113 interlocking levers. The program teaches how the tower controlled switches and signals along 3,250 feet of track in Harrisburg during its operational heyday. Visitors use the simulation to control virtual trains based on a 1940s Pennsylvania Railroad track pattern and period-correct timetables. The museum also features a Pennsylvania Railroad Position Light signal exhibit outside the tower, which visitors activate using a smartphone device. Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1930, Harris Tower remained in active use through Amtrak operations until 1991, when the Harrisburg Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society purchased and preserved it. The tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A visit suits anyone interested in railroad history and the technical operations of train control systems.
