About Fort Frederica National Monument

Fort Frederica National Monument preserves the ruins of an eighteenth-century fort and colonial town on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Visitors explore tabby fort ruins and walk grounds that once housed Scottish Highlander soldiers and settlers. The site features a reconstructed Barracks Building where guests learn about daily life during the colonial period. A visitor center provides exhibits on the history and culture of Fort Frederica and the people who inhabited the settlement. The monument includes the nearby Battle of Bloody Marsh site, also on St. Simons Island, where an important Revolutionary War engagement occurred. Volunteers dressed in period clothing offer interpretation and help bring the fort's history to life. The park welcomes history enthusiasts and those interested in coastal Georgia's colonial heritage, allowing visitors to walk among historical structures and understand the region's past.
