Fort McAllister State Park showcases a best-preserved Confederate earthwork fortification on the banks of the Ogeechee River near Richmond Hill. Visitors explore the grounds featuring cannons, a hot shot furnace, bombproof barracks and palisades while learning Civil War history at an onsite museum with artifacts and video. The park spans 1,725 acres nestled among live oaks, Spanish moss and salt marsh. Families can camp at seven stilts cabins surrounded by palmettos or choose from 67 tent, trailer and RV campsites in a shaded campground bordered by tidal Redbird Creek. A backcountry campsite lies 1.5 miles along a hiking trail. Fishing occurs from a dock or boat ramp providing river access. A large picnic area with river views includes playgrounds and two picnic shelters, with a group shelter seating 150. Nature trails wind through the property while boating and fishing attract outdoor enthusiasts.
