About Contra Costa County Historical Society

The Contra Costa County Historical Society operates the History Center in downtown Martinez, where visitors research family history, genealogy, property records, and local history. The archives contain newspapers and clippings, photographs, maps, books, government records, court files, and family papers spanning Contra Costa County's past. The collection includes tax assessor books from 1850 through 1910, county supervisor and treasurer records, and school board documents. Visitors use the PACT computer search tool to explore more than 300,000 records, photos, maps and historical documents. The center also accepts donations of photographs, letters and documents from residents and former residents for potential addition to the collection. Staff and volunteers assist with research requests. The History Center is housed in historic downtown Martinez and welcomes the public during regular business hours. Appointments are recommended for research visits to ensure appropriate staff assistance.

Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
